hot air balloon

(or: the day after in the world's hottest city, January 2014)

the bubble bursts with fireworks
and bass drum rolls
the thick air seeps at last,
weeps at last into the thirsty earth,
not deep enough to satisfy.
windows breath release -
freshness in - staleness out -
branches startle with their rude
percussion on iron above.
sweet relief is tainted by bitter fear
as sirens ring out the alarm
